Disney Cruise Line is heading to Japan, with a brand-new ship, a familiar mermaid and a spring 2029 debut.

Disney has officially revealed the name of its first Japan-based cruise ship, Disney Imagination, which is scheduled to set sail from Tokyo in spring 2029. The announcement marks another major milestone in Disney Cruise Line’s ambitious expansion, bringing the company’s signature cruise experiences to Japan for the first time. Unlike Disney’s existing fleet, Disney Imagination will be operated by Oriental Land Company, the organisation responsible for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.

The new vessel will join the Wish class of ships, with experiences and facilities specially adapted for the Japanese market.

The Little Mermaid Makes a Splash

Perhaps the most charming detail revealed so far is the ship’s stern decoration, which will feature Ariel and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid.

Continuing a Disney Cruise Line tradition, Ariel will be depicted using her trusty dinglehopper to write the ship’s name, surrounded by her underwater friends.

Disney has also confirmed that guests can expect original theatrical productions in a venue seating more than 1,300 people, character entertainment, three themed main dining restaurants and approximately 30 restaurants, cafés and bars. Dedicated children’s spaces and adults-only areas will also feature onboard.
