Shanghai Disney Resort has announced plans for a major expansion that includes the addition of a new themed hotel and an extension of its Disneytown district. The project comes as the resort celebrates welcoming its 100 millionth guest since opening in 2016, a milestone that cements its position among the most visited theme park destinations in the world.

The new hotel will become the resort’s fourth and is set to be located just steps away from the entrance to Shanghai Disneyland. It will be the closest of the resort’s accommodations to the park, offering guests a convenient gateway to their visit. While details of the hotel’s name, theme, and opening date have not yet been revealed, the development aims to expand the resort’s capacity and enhance the overall guest experience.
Alongside the hotel, Disneytown, the resort’s shopping, dining, and entertainment area, will also see significant growth. The expansion will introduce new retail, restaurant, and entertainment offerings designed to encourage longer stays and provide more options beyond the theme park gates.
The announcement marks another phase in Shanghai Disney Resort’s continued growth. Since its debut nine years ago, the resort has evolved into a cornerstone of Disney’s international portfolio, drawing tens of millions of visitors annually. According to the Themed Entertainment Association, it was among the top five most-visited theme parks worldwide in 2024.
This latest investment underscores Disney’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market and reflects the increasing appetite for multi-day resort experiences in the region. By expanding both its hotel capacity and entertainment district, Shanghai Disney Resort is positioning itself as a destination where guests can immerse themselves in the magic for longer — both inside and outside the park.
